What Are the U.S. Citizenship Requirements in Florida?

To become a U.S. citizen in Florida, you need to follow a series of steps. Here’s what is required of you to achieve naturalization.

Meet the Eligibility Requirements

You must be 18 years or older and satisfy one of two requirements: You must not have left the U.S. for longer than six months or you must have been in the U.S. for a total of at least 30 months.

If you do not meet those requirements, then you must have lived as a legal permanent resident in the U.S. for three years and meet one of the four requirements: Your spouse must have been a citizen for three years, you need to have lived with that spouse for the last three years, you must not have left the U.S. for longer than six months, and you must have been physically present in the U.S. for 18 months.

You Must be of Good Moral Character

This means that you are honest and you don’t lie about your criminal record if you have one. Your citizenship request could get denied if you were involved in prostitution, you have a DUI on your record, or you were charged with domestic violence, for instance within 5 years of applying.

You Need to Know the History of the U.S. Government

You’ll need to learn about the U.S. government and its history, and have the ability to read, understand, and write English. If you are at least 50 years old and have had your green card for at least 20 years, then you may qualify for an exemption for this.

You Need to Pass Your Civics Test

You’ll need to correctly answer at least six out of the 10 questions on your U.S. civics test to pass.
