What to Expect During a Family Visa Interview in Florida

You’ve always wanted to live in the United States, but it just didn’t seem possible. The rules of visas and citizenship are complicated, and you couldn’t imagine starting the process.

However, now, a family member is in the U.S., which means that you could potentially get a visa. By learning more about family visas and what to expect during the interview process in Florida, you will be prepared for your interview and closer to securing your visa.

What Is a Family Visa?

A family visa is a type of immigrant visa where a lawful permanent resident or a U.S. citizen petitions for a family member to come to the United States. Immediate Relative Immigrant Visas (IR) are for people who have immediate family members in the U.S. For example, the spouse of an immigrant, an unmarried child under 21 years of age, or parent of a U.S. citizen who is at least 21 years old may be able to get an IR visa. The most common type of family visa is one for a spouse.

What to Expect During Your Family Visa Interview

When you’re ready to go in for your interview, you’ll need to bring your completed visa application and interview appointment letter you received. Anyone applying for a visa – like your spouse or qualified unmarried children – must be there with you. You’ll also need to bring two identical color photographs for every applicant, the DS-260 Confirmation Page, and any supporting documentation that was requested.

A consular officer is going to interview you and accompanying family member beneficiaries who may be there. You will need to get your ink-free, digital fingerprints taken. Each applicant has to bring an unexpired passport valid for six months beyond the date you intend to enter the U.S.

The officer is going to ask you questions like: Why are you traveling to the U.S.? How are you going to pay for your trip? How long are you staying in the U.S.? Have you been to the U.S. before? Will you be studying or working? Make sure you are honest with the officer. Also, come to the interview dressed in a business professional outfit and arrive at least 45 minutes before your appointment.

What About a Family Green Card Interview?

You may have confused a family visa interview with a family green card interview. During the latter, if you’re going for a marriage green card, you’ll need to answer questions about your relationship with your spouse. This is so the immigration authorities can determine whether or not your marriage is legitimate.

They will ask questions such as: How and where did you meet? Who did you live with before you got married? Where was your spouse living before the two of you met? When did you get married? Where did the wedding take place? Who takes care of your family finances? What is your spouse’s date of birth?

If you are an adult child of a U.S. citizen seeking a green card, you will be asked questions like: What are the full names of your mother and father? Where do you live? And why do you want to come to the U.S.?

Remember, always be honest, and don’t be nervous.
